Getting a flat tyre is never a nice moment for anyone and can be very daunting for many, especially for those who have never had to change a tyre before. However, no need to feel flat about the whole thing, we have some wheely easy steps for you to follow to get you back on the road – if you are tyred of my mediocre puns then look away now, otherwise read carefully… okay, I’m done with all the wheely bad wheel puns. Now it’s time to get serious, here’s 10 easy steps to guide you on how to change a tyre…

Step 1 – Pull Over Safely

Step 2 – Loosen Wheel Nuts

Step 3 – Using The Jack

Step 4 – Remove

Step 5 – Fit New Tyre

Step 6 – Put The Wheel Nuts Back On

Step 7 – Lower Car

Step 8 – Tighten Wheel Nuts

Step 9 – Pack Up And Drive

Step 10 – Contact S.S.C. Mechanics

Equipment You’ll Need To Change A Tyre:

A Spare tyre

A Jack

Tyre Wrench

The equipment you’ll need to change a tyre is all usually located in the boot of your car (spare wheel compartment or jacking compartment).

Step 1 – Pull Over Safely

If you are driving and notice you may have a flat tyre, pull over to the side of the road and if possible park away from the road and other oncoming or passing by traffic. Put on your hazards and make sure your car’s handbrake is on before you start to change a tyre.

Step 2 – Loosen Wheel Nuts

Remove the required equipment from the compartment in your boot as stated previously. Using the Tyre wrench, loosen the wheel nuts but do not remove the wheel nuts completely.

Step 3 – Using The Jack

Locate your jacking point where the flat tyre has occurred, by checking your vehicle manual. Some newer vehicles may have marks such as arrows on the vehicle itself. However, if unsure, always consult the vehicle manual to locate the jacking points. Once located, place the jack under this point and raise the vehicle with the jack using its mechanism (usually winding or pumping up). Keep raising the vehicle until the flat tyre is raised off the ground before looking to change a tyre.

Step 4 – Remove Tyre

Once the wheel is jacked up off the floor, remove all wheel nuts that you have previously loosed and remove the flat tyre. Place the old tyre under the vehicle as a safety measure in case the jack fails.

Step 5 – Fit New Tyre

Get the new tyre and line up the wheel studs with the holes in the rim of the new tyre then place the tyre onto the wheel hub.

Step 6 – Put The Wheel Nuts Back On

To change a tyre to a new one, tighten the wheel nuts as much as you can by hand.

Step 7 – Lower Car

Remove the flat tyre from under the vehicle and either wind down the jack or release the hydraulic pressure if using a pump jack to lower the car.

Step 8 – Tighten Wheel Nuts

Using the tyre wrench, tighten the wheel nuts until tight to ensure the wheel does not fall off.

Step 9 – Pack Up And Drive

Put away all your equipment and flat tyres back into the jacking or spare wheel compartment in the boot of your car. If you need to change a tyre to a space saver, replace it with a new tyre as soon as possible as space saver tyres cannot be driven for long periods and are for temporary use only. Space saver tyres are usually a lot narrower than your usual tyre.
